Today is International Women’s Entrepreneurship Day and it’s fitting that we introduce Ashley Whetung, founder at Geti Cosmetics. We asked Ashley some questions about her small business as well as what keeps her motivated.
Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us! So tells us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to start Geti Cosmetics?
After nearly a decade in the health and wellness industry a health scare forced me to take a serious look at how I could clean up my environment to improve wellness and I was surprised to find that there were many harmful ingredients in makeup and skincare products. When I wasn’t able to find products I could align with, I combined my western health science training with my traditional Ojibwa knowledge and started making my own products – then sharing with friends and family. Eventually, Geti was born with just 2 products: our Kissable Cocoa Bronzer and C Here Detox Mask and we’ve been evolving since.
What does your typical day look like?
As the founder, I’m involved with every step of the process. From product creation and packaging to marketing and finance, so my days vary greatly depending on the needs that day: sometimes I’m in the lab making product for orders, others I’m in the office working on campaigns or design. On the days when I’m lucky, I get back to the basics in my kitchen and get to explore new product ideas I’ve been ruminating on. It’s been a huge learning experience for me, and I’m more aware than ever that a business is a machine and each piece/department must work together seamlessly in order to operate efficiently.
What is the most impactful piece of advice you’ve ever received?
An old boss (who’s now a very successful venture capitalist) once told me, “Keep your promises”. You only get one chance to make a good impression on a customer, client or potential partner, and when things are busy it can seem impossible to keep up – but reliability goes a LONG way in business, and if you can show people you hold up your end of the bargain they’ll become friends.
How do you make space for your mental wellness?
I’ve been working really hard to set boundaries and stick to them. I’m a people-pleaser, so it can be tough for me to say no to things (even if I don’t have the bandwidth to do it well). This year especially I’ve learned that I can make LESS promises and do a better job at keeping them and I’ll have time to take care of my soul at the same time.
We love your brand’s mission of using food-grade ingredients. Can you share your top tips for good/bad ingredients we should look out for?
Cleaning up your self-care products can seem daunting: there are so many “bad” ingredients to watch out for these days. One of the most harmful categories of ingredients is Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals – these ingredients mimic the natural hormones in our bodies and have been proven to be associated with dozens of health problems. Check out our blog about Hormone Disruptors to learn more.
