Our March Loti Wellness box is all about slowing down and practicing mindfulness. Consider what mindfulness practices you currently do and what mindfulness habits you can add into your life to improve your overall wellbeing.
First, let’s define mindfulness. Berkley defines mindfulness as living in the moment and feeling all the sensations that are happening in your body. There are many amazing health benefits to being mindful. An Indian study discovered that mindfulness practices increased resilience, which impacted overall life satisfaction positively. Let’s dive into the many other benefits that mindfulness habits breed!
The Science of Meditation
Meditation is a well-loved mindfulness practice that is said to promote lower stress levels by helping you tune into your body and calm your mind. The research behind meditation shows a multitude of benefits for people experiencing depression, burnout, and more!
A recent study on overworked teachers found that daily meditation lowered their stress levels, decreased their burnout compared to other teachers, and reduced depression. If that’s not a reason to try mindfulness meditation, we don’t know what is!
In addition, a Harvard study found that a wandering mind is linked with higher levels of unhappiness. Mindfulness meditation can ground you in the present, which promotes more happiness.
Body scanning is the art of tuning into your body, breath, and slowly moving through your body with your mind. Many people listen to audio that guides them through this practice and it’s one of our favorite mindfulness practices here at Loti.
Last fall, a study monitored a group of students who followed a 20 minute guided body scan ritual daily. During this eight week study, they decreased several stress hormones, including cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone, and had a lower psychological stress load when compared to the control group. These are some powerful reasons to consider trying body scanning!
Other Mindfulness Habits To Consider
It’s important to find what mindfulness habits are best for you. Here are some other mindfulness habits to try:
Mindful eating – Slow down and savor every bite as you eat. Stay in the moment and avoid distractions.
Mindful walking – Pay attention to the details around you and the wind on your skin as you take a stroll.
Your five senses – Tune into your five senses throughout the day to become more present and aware.
Share with us your mindfulness results in our private Facebook group where we join together to achieve our goals of living a mindful and purposeful life.
