Think of the level of happiness you feel towards your life at the moment. What is preventing you from being completely satisfied? Perhaps it’s your weekly bills, your career, or the way your home looks. Whatever it is that’s stopping you from living your happiest life, it’s normal to have these moments of doubt. But we can’t let these day-to-day tasks and overwhelming responsibilities take control over our state of mind.

We all want to live a happy and stress-free life, be in control of our time, live life to the fullest, and be present in every moment. Learning to simplify your life can bring you that happiness you’re constantly craving, and let you take back control of your life.

Now that we’re slowly beginning to step away from the busy summer season, it’s important to simplify areas of our lives. We do this to maintain that balanced and happy lifestyle we all strive for. Simplifying your life means removing unnecessary distractions and learning to set boundaries. This makes room for a less complicated and stress-free life.

Simplifying your life doesn’t have to be difficult, but it is necessary. Why? Because it teaches you how to be happier with yourself and the life you’ve built. In order to truly practice a life of minimalism, you must learn to remove the negativity from your physical surroundings and your mind. Doing this will ease feelings of anxiety, depression, and overwhelm.

By practicing a life of simplicity, we are able to release ourselves from any physical stressors and mental clutter that may be preventing us from truly relaxing. Making these changes is the key to a balanced and healthier life. Simplify your life for a happier you. Here’s how you can start doing just that!

    Clear your mind

One way to simplify your life is by practicing mindfulness. We often clutter our minds with unnecessary thoughts, which can lead to being unfocused throughout the day and mentally absent from those key moments in our lives.

For example, imagine thinking too much about paying your upcoming bills, that you’re not fully enjoying the movie you and your family are currently watching. Now, imagine being able to acknowledge that thought and release it from your mind before it affects your time with your family. Clearing your mind can lower stress levels, show you how to be happier, and allow you to be more present.

    MEDITATION

Practicing activities that promote mindfulness can do wonders. They can help you focus on one task at a time, pushing those pesky background thoughts aside to prioritize the thing that matters most: your well-being.

Meditation can be really helpful for clearing your mind. It can boost mindfulness and relieve stress by teaching you how to let go of cluttering thoughts, and refocus your attention to something more calming. Essentially, it’s important to acknowledge all of your thoughts, but redirect your focus to give you a strong sense of peace and balance.

    JOURNALING

If you’re unable to meditate often, or just aren’t at that level yet, you can write your thoughts down on a piece of paper instead through the act of journaling. Many find it helpful to write their thoughts down to better sort through what’s really bothering them. Writing things down is also an excellent way to symbolically remove them from your mind.

If you’d prefer to do something more physical, try taking a walk outside. Then, think through how you’re feeling, and release it. Sometimes all you need is a change of environment to refocus and refresh your mind.

Clearing your mind doesn’t have to be difficult or a chore. Explore different ways to declutter your mind, and eventually you’ll find something that works for you. Then you can incorporate this into your wellness routine. If you need any more guidance on ways you can clear your mind, read this helpful article.

    Learn to say no

Imagine this: you’re sitting at home with a soothing face mask on, and laying on your freshly washed sheets with your comfiest pair of pajamas on. You have your favourite movie playing in the background, and this is exactly the kind of night you’ve been craving. Now imagine being able to live your life this way all the time because you’ve learned how to set healthy boundaries. When you’ve learned to say no and truly prioritize your wants and needs, life becomes so much better.

Saying “no” can be a challenge for many of us. But when you learn to set healthy boundaries and use the word “no” more often, you’ll find it easier to focus on what’s truly important to you. You can’t be happy if you’re too busy meeting the needs of others instead of your own. Normalizing saying no is crucial to your happiness and health!

WHY DO WE HAVE TROUBLE SAYING NO?

The reason why some of us say yes when we really want to say no is because we want to accommodate other people’s needs before our own to avoid upsetting them. But what happens when we do this consistently? We begin to harbour feelings of exhaustion, resentment, and anxiety because we’re never able to fully relax and do things for the sake of pleasing ourselves. Instead of showing us how to be happier, this only takes away from us living a life we’re truly content with.

Learning to set boundaries can help you be more open and honest with the people around you, and this is important for your relationships, and your own mental health. People will quickly start putting less pressure on you once you stop putting yourself last.

    HOW TO SET BOUNDARIES

To practice setting clear boundaries in your life, try making a list of your top three priorities in life at the moment. Put them somewhere you’ll be able to see daily, like your nightstand, your phone’s lock screen, or your bathroom mirror. These priorities can be anything you want to put more effort towards, like visiting places you’ve never been to before, or spending more time doing what you love.

Whenever someone asks you for something, check over your list of priorities to see if the task you’re being asked to perform will serve any of the things you’ve vowed to put more time and effort into. If the answer is yes, go ahead and agree! But if the task you’re being asked to do doesn’t align with your list, ask yourself these questions:

    1. Are they asking you for something that goes against your priorities?
    2. Are they asking you for something that will make achieving your own goals more difficult?

If you still find that their ask goes against what’s important to you, it’s time to say no. There’s no shame in putting your own feelings first. For more ways you can learn to say no, check out this article by Good Therapy.

    Simplify your space

A cluttered environment can impact our mood, whether it causes feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, helplessness, or guilt. Being surrounded by clutter all the time can cause you to lose focus and start obsessing over things that are truly unimportant, like how messy your bookshelf is or how cluttered your linen closet is.

So in other words, a cluttered space is a cluttered mind. That’s why it’s important to give yourself an atmosphere where you can excel in and feel most at peace. This may involve you removing some unnecessary distractions from your space.

But what exactly is a simplified space? A simplified space is an area that meets your needs, while also being free from any clutter that could cause a distraction. This space should also provide you with the ultimate feeling of peace and relaxation. Living a life inspired by minimalism means living purposefully, which can do wonders for your mental health and self-care journey.

By removing unnecessary distractions from our lives, we create room for opportunities for ourselves to be more productive and to focus on the things that matter most to us, whatever they may be. If you’re struggling with how to be happier, simplifying your space is a good start.

    DECLUTTER YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Now it’s time to begin decluttering your space and paving the way for your ideal atmosphere! Start by dedicating the time and allotting yourself a few hours each week to work through different sections of your home. Remember that it’s okay to go slow and work at your own pace. Clutter doesn’t accumulate in one day, so it makes sense that it takes you longer than one day to clean it out.

When it comes to actually removing items, think about it like this: if it brings you more stress than joy, you don’t need it. If you haven’t used the item in over a year, you won’t miss it if it’s gone. If you find yourself needing more guidance on the art of decluttering, give this article a read!
